It’s time…it’s time…it’s Book End Time!  Welcome to this week’s Book End, highlighting the weekend’s literary and library events here in Hawaii.

Bento Contest!

Mutual Publishing is hosting a fun contest the next few weeks!  They want you to show off your very own Bento Box creations.  Design and create your own unique bento box, take a picture of it and share it with Mutual Publishing.  Winner will receive recognition, their bento box proudly displayed on Mutual’s Facebook and Twitter pages, and two free bento cookbooks.  Here’s the breakdown:

What: Bento Box design contest

When: January 22nd – February 28

How: Post a photo of your bento on Mutual Publishing’s Facebook page or e-mail the photo to info@mutualpublishing.com.

Criteria and Categories: One winner only, best overall design

Prize: One winner will receive both Hawaii’s Bento Box Cookbook and Hawaii’s Bento Box Cookbook 2nd Course [read our review], both by Susan K. Yuen.

Saturday, January 22

  • 10:00am – Maui!  Bring your keiki to children’s story time at Barnes & Noble in Lahaina.  More info here.
  • 10:30am – Come and see “The New Sense-Sational Show” at Mililani Public Library!  This show takes into consideration young children’s developmental level and puts them at the center of the production.  Part performance, part participation, this new take on a popular HTY production offers plenty to see! And smell!  And hear!  And touch!  And even to taste!  This free 30-minute program is suggested for ages 3 to 5.  Call 627-7470 for more info.
  • 11:00am – Hawai`i Kai Public Library presents a “Meet the Author” free program called Prescriptions for Living a Creative Life by author Neil Tepper at 11 am. You can read our review of Tepper’s book of the same name here: [Free your creativity!…].  Tepper is a former creative executive with Coca-Cola Company, Universal Television and other companies, as well as a TV producer and award-winning photographer and songwriter.   • 11:00am – Children’s Story Time at Barnes & Noble Ala Moana.  They’ll be reading Quackenstein Hatches a Family by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen.  More info
  • 01:00pm – Learn the “Art of Origami” with Scott Macri, a member of the Hawaii Origami Club, at Kapolei Public Library.  Paper will be provided for the workshop and participants can take home their origami models. This three-hour workshop is recommended for ages 12 and older. For more information, call 693-7050.
  • 01:00pm – Author Event at Barnes & Noble Kahala Mall.  Come and meet author Hazel Kazuko Arii Ho as she will be signing copies of her book One Cup Rice: Life Stories.  You can learn more about the book here.
  • 02:00pm – Author Event at Borders in Ward Centre.  If you missed Chef Alan Wong discussing his cooking style and influences and signing his new cookbook, then you must check this out—could be the last signing in a while!  Meet renowned local chef Alan Wong as he discusses and signs copies of his new cookbook The Blue Tomato.  [Read our review here]

Sunday, January 23

  • 03:00pm – Revolution Books (2626 S. King Street) will host a reading from two authors.  Tom Gammarino will read from his recent novel: Big in Japan: A Ghost Story and Joseph Cardinale from his just-released book of short stories: The Size of the Universe.  Tom Gammarino received his Ph.D. at UH Manoa last year and is now teaching at Punahou.  Joseph Cardinale is working on his Ph.D. at UH-Manoa.  Join them to hear from two of Hawai`i’s newest published authors.  More info here.
  • 05:00pm – Author Event at Barnes & Noble Kahala Mall.  Come to the store as they welcome author John A. Andrews.  He’ll be signing copies of his novel, Rude Buay: The Unstoppable.  More about the book here.  More info about the event here.
