Hawaii Book & Music Festival!

Yes, the Hawaii Book & Music Festival (HBMF) is still roughly four months away, but we are already getting excited for what is one of the biggest literary events of the year!  This year, the folks behind the HBMF have wisely jumped on the social media wagon in order to help spread new information about the event as they get it.  You can follow HBMF on Twitter at @HBAMFestival and “Like” them on Facebook from this link here.

Friday, February 4

  • 02:30pm – A book signing and sale of Mun Lun School’s new book “Hawai’i’s Shining Star” will occur 2:30 to 5 p.m. Friday on the campus at 1290 Maunakea St., as part of the school’s centennial commemoration. For information, call 595-3328.  Source

Saturday, February 5

  • 09:00am – The Little Greenies book launch at Ramsar World Wetlands Day 2011.  Wetlands Day will run from 9am – 1:30pm on the shared campus of the Windward YMCA and Faith Baptist Church, 1200 -1230 Kailua Road.  There will be tours of the Kawainui and Hāmākua Marsh Complex, talks, exhibits, Hawaiian plant and food sales, entertainment, and learning activities for the whole family such as games, tree planting, hands on crafts and the launching of The Little Greenies books.  For more information, check out their Facebook Event page or “Like” their official Facebook page.  Cute, yah?
  • 10:00am – Bring mom and dad to a special Saturday story time at Barnes & Noble Lahaina (Maui).  More info here.
  • 10:00am – It’s time once again for the Friends of the Library of Hawaii’s First Saturday Sale at Bill’s Bookmobile (690 Pohukaina St.) from 10am until 2pm.  Over 2,500 everyday bookmobile selections will be available; specials for February include Travel, Romance, Poetry, Maps, Cookbooks, Hobbies, Children’s Books and Music!  For more information check out the First Saturday flyer.
  • 11:00am – Children’s Story Time at Barnes & Noble Ala Moana.  The featured book will be “The Runaway Wok: A Chinese New Year Tale” by Ying Chang Compestine.  More info here.
  • 12:45pm – Chinese New Year Celebration Dance at Barnes & Noble Ala Moana.  Sometime between 12:45 and 2:45 pm the Chinese New Year Dragon Dancers will visit our store. Come and see them dance, and participate in New Year festivities!  More info here.
  • 01:00pm – Bookfair production at Barnes & Noble Ala Moana!  The Kaimuki Performing Arts Center of Kaimuki High School will perform excerpts from their latest production, Pirates of Penzance.  Part of the proceeds from purchases made at the store and credited to the Kaimuki Performing Arts Center will go to help fund the organization.  More info here.

Sunday, February 6

  • 06:45pm – Come to the next Aloha Shorts taping at HPR’s Atherton Studio (738 Kaheka St.).  This month’s theme is “Honolulu: Livin’ in the City” and will feature many pieces capturing the flavor of Honolulu’s distinct neighborhoods from Kaimuki to Moiliili and everywhere in between.  Reservations (made by calling 955-8821 during business hours) are required and audiences are advised to call immediately as tapings always “sell out.”  For more information visit the HPR website [event link here].

Since there isn’t much happening this weekend, I wanted to highlight a few interesting events that are happening this coming week (2/7 – 2/10):

  • The Kennedy Detail book signing will happen at Barnes & Noble Lahaina (325 Keawe #101) on Tuesday, February 9, 4:00pm.  Author Gerald “Jerry” Blaine will be on hand to sign copies of his book The Kennedy Detail: JFK’s Secret Service Agents Break Their Silence.  For more information you can check out the Facebook fan page.
  • Talking Hawaii’s Story – UH Mānoa Center for Oral History’s Michi Kodama-Nishimoto and Warren S. Nishimoto are the Faculty Lecture Series’ guest speakers on Wednesday, February 9 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. The long-time oral historians will share their book Talking Hawai‘i’s Story: Oral Histories of an Island People at the University of Hawaii Manoa Campus’ Hamilton Library, room 301.   • Author Bill Fernandez will give a talk story discussion at Kamehameha Schools’ Kapalama Campus in the Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, February 9, 7:00pm.  Bill (Class of  ‘49) will share timeless stories of his hometown, Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i featured in his book, Rainbows Over Kapa‘a [Read our book review].  For more information on this event, check out the official flyer.
  • M.I.A. Art & Literary Series continues on Wednesday, February 9, 7:30pm at the Mercury Bar (1154 Fort Street Mall).  This month will feature speakers from both Tinfish 20 & Hawaii Review 73 including Amalia Bueno, Donovan Colleps, Peter Forman, Jaimie Gusman, Christina Low, Jade Sunouchi, Craig Santos Perez, Tiare Picard, Joe Tsujimoto.  Don’t forget to bring cash for books and booze!  More information on their website [click here].
  • Value of Hawaii panel discussion at Chaminade University, on Thursday, February 10 from 7:00pm in the Ching Conference Center, Eiben Hall, 2nd floor.  This discussion will focus on Social Services and will feature The Value of Hawai‘i contributor Susan Chandler and another member of the community.
