  • Book Launch: Border Walls – Come on campus for the book launch for Border Walls: Security and the War on Terror in the United States, India, and Israel by Reece Jones, Associate Professor of Geography at UH-Manoa. The launch will feature a lecture by Jones followed by refreshments and talk story. Border Walls is a bold, important intervention that demonstrates that the exclusion and violence necessary to secure the borders of the modern state often undermine the very ideals of freedom and democracy they are meant to protect.   • Native Voices Reading and Lecture Series – Daren Kamali is a Fiji-born-New Zealander, cofounder of the South Auckland Poets Collective and launched his first book and CD, Tales, Poems and Songs from the Underwater World, in 2011. Grace Taylor, born and raised in South Auckland, Aotearoa/New Zealand. Grace won the Auckland Writers & Readers Festival’s Poetry Idol 2008 and was a Top 5 finalist in 2009. Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, born in the Marshall Islands and raised in Hawai‘i. Her work is a blend of storytelling and activism. Kuʻualoha Hoʻomanawanui is an internationally published Kanaka Maoli poet and is a founding editor of ‘Oiwi: A Native Hawaiian Journal. University of Hawaii Manoa Campus (Halau o Haumea, Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies); 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.   • Special Plenty Saimin keiki event – Come down and support First Book-Oahu (FBO) and enjoy a very special keiki storytime with Feng Feng Hutchins, the author of the award-winning children’s book Plenty Saimin [read our review here]. After the reading, Feng Feng will be available to sign copies of her book. So, please help out FBO’s fundraising efforts to buy books for Hawaii’s underprivileged children and enjoy the children’s literary masterpiece that is Plenty Saimin.   • Building Self-Worth and Self-Esteem in Teens and Young Adults – Marlenea Salmu, founder and president of Intelligent One, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to empowering teens and young adults to build self-esteem and to instill respect for oneself and others, will be presenting this educational program.  Marlenea will be offering some cool tools in building self-worth and self-esteem.  She will be showing two videos: “Bullying” and “Is there a time to fight?”  There are also going to be some games that patrons can participate in to win prizes.  This one-hour program is suitable for ages 15 and older.   • The Eye of the Lion Book Signing – Experience a hurricane through the eyes of a child. Master storyteller, Mark Jeffers of Storybook Theatre, recounts the story of Hurricane ‘Iniki as it passes over the island of Kauaʻi leaving a wake of destruction in its path. He shows how one Hawaiian family prepares for the hurricane and supports each other while the storm passes over their home.   • My Name is Makia Reading and Book Signing – The book was crafted by veteran broadcast journalist Pamela Young from years of conversations with Malo combined with earlier attempts at documenting his life, written by himself and edited by his late wife, Ann. Woven throughout his narrative are transcriptions of many of the stories Malo has told to audiences around the world.   • Special Event with Author and Kona Chef Jason Lofland – In Catch!: Dangerous Tales and Manly Recipes from the Bering Sea, Travis and his brother, Kona chef Jason Lofland, share secrets for navigating the high seas and making great food that will stick to your ribs. Jason says that growing up in Alaska gave him the opportunity to work with some of the freshest and best seafood around, especially having a commercial fisherman for a brother. In the Lofland family cooking and eating great food is a big part of life. Jason has helped open hotels and restaurants across the state and was the sous chef at La Bourgogne for 3 years. He is currently cooking at Holuakoa. Don’t miss this delicious event! Aspiring cooks will be invited to nibble on some samples while hearing Jason’s tales of kitchen adventures.   • Korean Dance and Music – Bonnie Kim will provide a lecture-demonstration that will feature a collection of various Korean dance and music performances. Bonnie is a recipient of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Folk & Traditional Arts Program Apprenticeship Grant for 2011-2013. She has been studying with Mary Jo Freshley at Halla Huhm Korean Dance Studio for her apprenticeship project, focusing on developing Korean dance and music outreach programs for schools and communities. This one-hour program is produced by the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program. Recommended for all ages.   • Kalaupapa: A Collective Memory – Come celebrate the publication of a monumental work on a very special place and its people by Anwei Skinsnes Law. She will speak on her newest and most comprehensive book, Kalaupapa: A Collective Memory. Over the last forty years, she has researched the history of leprosy in Hawaii, conducted oral history interviews at Kalaupapa, and produced documentaries and books on different aspects of its history. Join everyone as she shares some of the powerful and poignant stories of the residents and answers questions; then stay for a book signing, talk story, and refreshments.
