It’s time…it’s time…it’s Book End Time!  Welcome to this week’s Book End, highlighting the weekend’s literary and library events here in Hawaii.

We had a such a great time last weekend!  The weekend started off phenomenally by attending our very first Ka Palapala Po’okela Awards (recap here).  It was a fun experience and we thank everyone involved who invited us.  Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more reviews on some of the winners (we have the books, we just don’t have the time!)  We saw a few familiar faces and met a few new ones as well, and had a wonderful experience overall.

Susan Yuen at Barnes & Noble

Saturday we got to meet two Hawai’i authors who just recently released new books this year.  Both had book signings at Barnes & Noble Ala Moana, so it was very convenient for us.  We first met Susan Yuen, the author of Hawaii’s Bento Box Cookbook, 2nd Course, who is such a sweet person.  Aside from her books, she had really cute bento snacks prepared for anyone who came up to the table.  We were very glad to meet her and Misty is looking forward to writing up a review for her latest book.  If you missed her, she has a couple book signings this weekend (see below or visit her blog to see great bento pics).

Afterwards we got to meet the author of One Man’s Paradise (which we reviewed here), Doug Corleone.  Doug is a great guy who used to work as a criminal defense attorney in New York (so he knows what he’s writing about) and was generous enough to give us an author interview (see here).  We’re sad we forgot to get a picture with him—maybe next time.  He’s also having another book signing this weekend so check it out! It’s important that we show our support for all of our local authors, so I highly recommend if you have time, or are in the area, to attend as many of these author events as you can.

Barnes & Noble Book Fair (May 7-9)

Saint Louis School president Judge Walter Kirimitsu and Sacred Hearts Head of School Betty White will vie for bragging rights and the chance to outfit the opposition in their school athletic jersey for a day.  The neighboring schools have teamed up for a Mother’s Day Weekend Book Fair at Barnes & Noble Kahala Mall (May 7 – 9, 2010) that will allow them to earn up to 20% of in-store and online customer purchases (certain items excluded). To direct funds to either school, shoppers must present a school book fair voucher (downloadable at www.bookshawaii.net/ProphecyFundraiser) or simply mention either school at checkout. Online purchases may be made through May 14, and require the school ID code, printed on the vouchers (see website for details). The schools’ earnings percentage increases based on the amount of merchandise sold.

Photo Exhibit at the Hawaii State Library

The Eyes of Hawaii Photography Club’s fourth annual exhibit is now on display at the Hawaii State Library in the Lobby and in the reading room next to the Hawaii and Pacific Section.  The exhibit will be on display from May 6 through 27, 2010 and features a variety of photographs including animals, landscapes, people and events in Hawaii, as well as those from various national and international destinations taken in 2009 and early 2010.  This exhibit is suitable for all ages, and may be viewed during normal library hours.
